Fresh Start

Video PSA - 10 Minutes a Day

Peach-Gradient-RGB.jpg

Fresh Start is a statewide multimedia campaign educating Alaskan adults about free programs for better health that help you lose weight and prevent diabetes; Stop smoking, vaping, or chewing tobacco; Lower your blood sugar and manage diabetes; Be active; and Lower your blood pressure.

The “10 Minutes a Day” campaign stresses the importance of small intervals of activity, adding up to create change. Many people view physical activity as something that demands too much time and effort. For those who work during the day, it might seem daunting to set aside time for themselves for exercise. “10 Minutes a Day” communicates that dedicating just 10 minutes daily to any form of physical activity, even something as simple as walking, can lead to meaningful health benefits and measurable improvements in overall well-being.

The goal of this campaign was to communicate that 10 minutes of physical activity every day leads to overall physical health improvement and reduces the risk of chronic diseases over your lifetime. This campaign was directed to adults 35 years and older, those with lower income or less formal education, and Alaska Native adults in rural and remote areas. Through experience and research, statewide programs featuring a variety of interventions, including a paid media component, have the most success in impacting and sustaining social behavioral change. Since the launch of the Fresh Start campaign in 2022, more Alaskans have joined programs to lose weight, prevent and manage diabetes, or lower their blood pressure than in the prior three years combined.

Radio PSA - Feel Better for Free

The radio PSA was part of a larger, comprehensive media campaign for the Fresh Start Campaign, “Feel Better for Free”. The campaign was designed to highlight shared risk factors for chronic disease that affect many Alaskans, including insufficient sleep, low physical activity, elevated blood sugar or blood pressure, and tobacco use.

The call to action was simple and accessible: connect with free programs that support better health, all offered by the State of Alaska Department of Health. While these free programs had been offered for several years before the launch of the Fresh Start campaign, unifying them under a single, cohesive campaign significantly increased awareness and engagement. In its first year, more than 4,000 Alaskans enrolled in Fresh Start programs. Campaign success was measured by enrollment in Fresh Start programs focused on losing weight, lowering blood sugar and blood pressure, and quitting smoking, vaping, or chewing.
